Steps for Changing Your Integra Ignition Coil

The failure of your vehicle’s ignition control usually happens when your vehicle’s engine is hot. There are certain signs that will indicate the need to replace your vehicle’s ignition coil. These include an engine that cuts out while you’re driving, your vehicle is failing to start unless it has cooled down after running, or your vehicles tachometer begins jumping or becomes unresponsive. If your car continuously cuts out or will not start, your Integra ignition coil may need to be replaced. This is a relatively simple issue to fix if you have a new ignition coil, a Philips screwdriver, and masking tape to mark the rotor position.

1

Disconnect Your Vehicle’s Battery

Disconnect your vehicles negative battery cable before you begin to protect yourself from being shocked while you work.

2

Remove the Distributor Cap

Remove the cap from your vehicle’s distributor.

3

Access the Ignition Coil

Remove the plastic piece that covers the ignition coil in order to expose it to be replaced.

4

Label the Position of the Rotor

Use a piece of masking tape to label the position of your rotor on the housing in order to replace it properly when you are done. If the rotor is not reassembled correctly, the ignition coil will not work correctly.

5

Remove the Ignition Rotor and Leak Cover

Make sure that the position of the rotor is labeled correctly on the housing and remove the ignition rotor. Once the ignition rotor is removed, remove the leak cover as well.

6

Remove the Screws Holding the Ignition Coil

Remove the screws that hold the ignition coil in the housing. These screws may be different lengths, if so, use the masking tape to label the screws so you will know where each one goes. You could also just make a mental note of where each screw belongs.

7

Remove the Ignition Coil

Lift the old ignition coil out and sit it out of your way.

8

Install the New Ignition Coil

Place the new ignition coil in the spot left by the old coil.

9

Replace the Screws

Secure the new ignition coil with the screws you previously removed. Make sure that you place the screws in their correct spots.

10

Replace the Leak Cover and Rotor

Replace the leak cover in its previous position. Return the rotor to its previous position using the labels you placed on the housing. Make sure that it is installed correctly.

11

Replace the Ignition Coil Cover

Put the ignition cover back in its corrects spot

12

Reconnect the Battery Cable and Test Your Vehicle

Reconnect the negative cable to the battery and test your vehicle to make sure that it runs correctly.

Replacing your Integra ignition coil is a very simple procedure. It only takes about 30 minutes to an hour for even the most inexperienced mechanic. Learning to do this repair for yourself can save you a significant amount of money. Doing this repair on your own only requires a small amount of your personal time and the cost of a new coil, as opposed to the cost of parts and labor if you take your vehicle to a garage. Make the wise choice and follow these very easy steps to do the job on your own.
